| SEPTEMBER 11 2007 Thomas Hansen, 1976 - 2007. Yesterday, Thomas Hansen was found dead in his apartment in Oslo. I never had the chance to explain to Thomas why it meant so much to me to release one of his records, the fact that it was through grief that I came to fall in love with his music when I first heard it. There is so much I want to say about Thomas, but nothing that would be more appropriate or fitting than what his good friend Reidar has already written, which I have taken the liberty of reproducing below.... Rest in peace, Thomas. Saint Thomas web site ******************************* Last night, my incredibly dear friend Thomas Hansen was found passed away in his apartment in Oslo. He was 31 years old. Today is a tough day for his friends and family, and for all of those who were touched by the music he created. Many sang better than him or knew more chords on the guitar, but Thomas had a fantastic sense for melody that was surpassed by few. He would phone you up and ask for a suggestion for a song title, and thirty minutes later he would call again and play you the incredible song that he had just written and recorded for you. Thomas struggled at many points in his life, his mental problems and addictions were public knowledge because he dared to speak about them. What would be his latest record was recorded at the lowest point of his life, a brutally honest album detailing the struggles of addiction and pain that he was experiencing. He got help and he got better, but there was always the struggle in his life between the shy boy who just wanted to be left alone and the artist who had to look his audience in the eye. Hopefully, he has finally found peace. My deepest sympathies to Beth, Terje and Kate. Getting to know your son and your brother was the most important thing that ever happened in my life. I miss him so much. See you on the other side, Thomas. Reidar A. Eik September 11th 2007 ******************************* |

FEBRUARY 2007
Reviews of Saint Thomas "There's Only One of Me" here... | ||||||
| JANUARY 2007 A belated Happy New Year from yesboyicecream records! May all your hopes and inappropriate dreams be fulfilled in 2007.
SAINT THOMAS - There's Only One Of Me (yesboyicecream) **** (four stars, and only major deities get five) Gnarly Oslo troubadour back on form. Having recently confessed that pills and alcohol "destroyed my career", Thomas Hansen's sixth LP is a self-recorded affair that suggests a hermit's life is the way forward. As such, it's as roughed up as his psyche. With keening vibrato and raw acoustics, the title track and outsider tale "The Dinner Party" lurch like a punk Neil Young. "The Famous Stalker" finds him peeking out from the shadows of depression, offset by the rustic loveliness of "My Morning" and "After The Show"; both could be Elliott Smith channelling Doc Boggs. An unsettling, addictive return. |

NOVEMBER 2006 Anyone in Dublin wanting to buy any yesboyicecream releases can now walk into Road Records of Fade Street and demand satisfaction by purchasing any of the following records:
"Swedish plonk-fuzz pop from SUBURBAN KIDS WITH BIBLICAL NAMES. This is total fun. It's proper lo-fi joyous indie pop from the soul with a real dash of heart warming humour. 'Rent a Wreck' is like Moldy Peaches crossed with the Radio Dept to give ya'all an incredibly loose frame of reference. It also sounds like it's been on the lash with Anthony for two days. There's that charming off key tremor in the vocals. 'Love Will' is a kinda shuffling Violent Femmes bar-room clapalong that just delights me to the core. 'Do it all don't do it all' has a celebratory mountain gazing crooner thang to accompany it's intimate Smithsian joy (yes, a paradox, i know). They definitely have complete magic on their side this duo. The closer once again makes me think of Orange Juice in places but with flutes. This is what indie is about. Not the haircuts, the "scenesters", the limited edition stencilled 7" with free sticker, the fucking NME. This is the REAL DEAL. Trust me. If you're not moved by this 4 track EP then you're into the wrong music."

MARCH 2006: Right now, the only news is June Brides news.... Still shaking with excitement, yesboyicecream records is proud to announce the release of Still Unravished, a tribute to indie-pop's finest, The June Brides. As everyone knows, tribute records are mostly crap. But here's one that proposes to contravene the immutable laws of musical physics through the quality of its source material and the contributing artists. So, in the true spirit of edutainment, this album brings together a fantastic line-up of discerning artists from around the globe, new and old, all great, in celebration of Britain’s last, great soul band. Dust off your dancing shoes, get up and recognise the heart, the beauty, the brilliance of The June Brides - still unravished. Read more... |
